CBSE Lab & Library Norms for New School Setup and Affiliation
In this video of the CBSE Masterclass – New School Setup Series, Dr. Sudhir Pawar explains the important compliance points related to school laboratories and library for CBSE affiliation and inspection preparation.
Many schools face deficiencies during inspection because the laboratory and library are treated only as rooms, but during compliance checking, the focus is on proper planning, functionality, safety, records and actual usability by students.
What this video covers
- Minimum laboratory size and basic planning
- Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratory setup
- Workstations for student practicals
- Sink and gas supply requirements for Chemistry and Biology labs
- Equipment storage shelves and cabinets
- Laboratory stock register and bills
- Fire extinguisher, exhaust and safety instruction display
- Library books, journals and reading space
- Accession register and issue register
- Library stamp, accession serial number and book records
- Common deficiencies that can delay or affect affiliation approval
Laboratory Compliance Points
A CBSE school laboratory should be properly planned, clean, safe and functional. A laboratory should not look like a storage room. It should have proper workstations where students can perform practicals in batches.
Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories should have sufficient space, proper furniture, equipment storage, practical apparatus, white board, teacher demonstration area and safety arrangements. Chemistry and Biology labs should have proper sink and gas arrangements where required. Physics lab generally needs proper workstations and apparatus for practical learning.
Schools should also maintain a proper stock register with entries of lab equipment, quantity, date of purchase, bill details and verification. Bills should be safely kept and verified by the school authority.
Library Compliance Points
The school library should be well-organized, student-friendly and inspection-ready. It should have sufficient books, journals, proper bookshelves, reading tables and chairs for students and staff.
The accession register should include complete details of books such as title, author name, publisher name, subject, number of pages, purchase date, bill number and number of copies available. Books should also carry the library stamp and accession serial number.
An issue register should also be maintained to record which book was issued, to whom it was issued, issue date and return date.
Common Mistakes Schools Should Avoid
- Creating a lab room without proper practical workstations
- No sink or gas point where required
- No stock register or incomplete stock entries
- Lab equipment without supporting bills
- No fire extinguisher or safety instructions
- Library books without accession number or stamp
- Incomplete accession register
- No issue register
- Insufficient reading space
- Poor maintenance and weak inspection presentation
